What is hobby horsing?

Welcome to the world of hobby horsing!

In recent years hobby horsing has gained widespread attention for its unique blend of equestrian passion and artistic expression. But what exactly is hobby horsing and why has it captured the hearts of so many enthusiasts around the globe?

In this blog post I will discuss hobby horsing. I am a Finn living in Alaska who loves horses! And if you are reading this my guess is that you might love horses too? If so, keep on reading!

I have two horse crazy girls who love horses as well and ride real horses and hobby horses and have several hobby horses that I have made for them. I have a son also but he is not so into horses. Wanted to mention that because not everyone is into horses.

So, what is a hobby horse, really?

I have heard people say: “Oh you sell horse heads” or “They are horse heads on a stick”. Some say: “Oh what a beautiful horse that is!” or “I want one of those!” Yes you can say that they are horse heads, in a way. But they are also so much more! Hobby horse is a handmade unique horse with a stick that children and teenagers, or even adults can ride.

Hobby horses are very unique and handmade very well. Most hobby horses have an open mouth and are made of three pieces: two sides and a middle piece. You can put all kinds of tack on them such as halters, bridles, blankets and ear bonnets. And these can come in many different styles and colors as well.

But what sets it apart from a stick horse?

It differs from a stick horse in that it typically has a more detailed horse head design that can be very realistic looking. Unlike stick horses, hobby horses are not toys for very small children.

When I was a young girl I rode stick horses that I had made myself from sticks and socks. I would make them a yarn mane and draw them eyes and nostrils. Those horses were great and I loved riding them back in the day. Fast forward 30+ years and there are all kinds of beautiful hobby horses out there to choose from!

Hobby horses can be very different. Some are great for jumping, some for dressage and some can be very small. They have different colors and breeds even. I think all hobby horses are unique because they are individually handmade.

Is hobby horsing popular?

Hobby horsing has gained popularity in recent years, particularly among young people and in certain communities. While it may not be as mainstream as some other hobbies or sports there are dedicated followers and enthusiasts participating in organized events, competitions and online communities.

Many people are interested in hobby horsing and some who are looking at it from a distance might have different opinions about it. But for me the most important aspect of hobby horsing is its ability to bring joy to people and make them happy.

Hobby horsing is also a great hobby for those people who can’t ride real horses and would still like to enjoy horses.

Where did hobby horsing originate from?

Did you know that hobby horsing originated in Finland? It is a fairly new hobby there as well but it has gained popularity there and in other countries as well. It has evolved into a competitive sport and hobby for people of all ages.

Who is it for?

Hobby horsing is for anyone who has a passion for horses and enjoys creative and physical activities. It has become a hobby that is enjoyed by people of all ages, from children to adults. It's particularly popular among those who love horses as well as those who may not have access to real ones or formal equestrian sports.

It makes a great activity for riding with friends or alone. You can ride horses at home or go for a ride in the forest with your friends. There are also hobby horse camps available in some countries as well as hobby horse competitions. You can enjoy taking care of your hobby horse and put different accessories and tack on your horse. Sky's the limit!

In conclusion

Hobby horsing is so much more than just a play —it is a community of horse lovers where anyone can feel at home. Whether you're playing for fun in the yard or taking on the big hobby horse competitions, it's all about expressing yourself, making new friends and having fun with what you love!
